I write for foundations, universities, and nonprofit community organizations that desire a clear compelling voice for their publications and websites. My clients include the Annie E. Casey Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.
My work features the voices of people who face tough challenges in their schools, workplaces, and communities and chronicles their inspired efforts to improve life for themselves and others. Your organization no doubt plays a crucial role in creating opportunities that enable people to learn, grow, and get ahead. I’ll help you identify the pieces of the story you want to communicate and the people and voices who can tell it best.
For more than twenty years I have been reporting on issues of youth, education, the environment, and community change. I was a writer for KCTS public television in Seattle before launching my freelance writing business in 1991. My work for public television led to film production, and I directed and produced several award-winning documentary films. My film, Take This Heart, was broadcast on PBS and was awarded the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism. I am a graduate of the University of Oregon, in English. My poems and stories have appeared in The Sun, Open Spaces, CutBank, Pontoon, and Pacific Northwest. I worked as a waitress, short-order cook, bookseller, and food bank coordinator before pursuing writing and filmmaking full time.
